There's something magical about October in Korea that makes your heart flutter. This year, I grabbed my camera and actually went hunting for the best autumn foliage spots across the country. I wanted to see for myself if those Instagram-worthy scenes were real! Today, I'm sharing my honest review of 4 stunning October autumn foliage destinations I personally visited - perfect for 20s-30s travelers and international visitors. 🍁✨
1️⃣ Ungok Seowon (Gyeongju) - Where Ancient Wisdom Meets Autumn Splendor 🏛️
📍 Location: 119 Yangdongmaeul-gil, Gangdong-myeon, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
💰 Admission: Free
🅿️ Parking: Free parking
⏰ When I Went: 10 AM (perfect timing!)
Honestly, I thought "How special can a Confucian academy be?" But the moment I arrived, my jaw dropped. Located near Yangdong Village, Ungok Seowon became my favorite surprise - this Joseon Dynasty academy with its tranquil atmosphere combined with autumn colors is definitely one of the best October autumn foliage spots! 🍂
I took most of my photos at the stone wall entrance path. The 300-year-old stone walls flanked by maple trees create this natural tunnel, and when sunlight filtered through, it looked straight out of a movie! 📸
I showed my foreign friends and described it as "Korean traditional scholar's hall with autumn leaves" - they were super jealous!
My Best Photo Spots:
- I stood in the courtyard and captured the tile roofs with maple trees in one frame. Portrait mode looked even better!
- Apparently, if you go early morning, you might catch fog. I missed it but definitely planning to go at dawn next time
- I rented a hanbok in downtown Gyeongju - total game changer! 👘 The photos came out completely different!
Food I Actually Tried: Hwangridan-gil (15 min drive) - I had steamed buns and coffee there, absolutely delicious!

2️⃣ Magoksa Temple (Gongju) - Millennium-Old Temple in Golden Glory 🛕
📍 Location: 966 Magoksa-ro, Sagok-myeon, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do
💰 Admission: 3,000 KRW for adults (total bargain!)
🅿️ Parking: 2,000 KRW
⏰ When I Went: Around 2 PM (it was crowded ㅠㅠ)
I totally get why it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site now. Magoksa was the largest and most magnificent October autumn foliage spot I visited. This thousand-year-old temple nestled in Mt. Taehwa's slopes had ginkgo and maple trees around Daeungjeon Hall turning golden and blazing red - it was absolutely spectacular. 🍂✨
I took most photos at the stairs in front of Daegwangbojeon Hall. The view looking down at the autumn forest and valley from those stairs was... I can't even describe it. I went in mid-October and caught the peak colors perfectly!
My Best Photo Spots:
- Walking the forest trail for those tunnel shots was insane
- I captured maple reflections in the pond beside Daeungjeon Hall - immediately made it my phone wallpaper 💧
- They offer temple stay programs too. Planning to do a 2-day trip next time
- Search "Magoksa Temple autumn foliage" for tons of useful info
Food I Actually Tried: Had mountain vegetable bibimbap at Ssangsu Restaurant near the temple entrance - probably got 20 different side dishes! Also recommend Gongju Kalguksu Alley (20 min drive)

3️⃣ Nakgang Water Park (Andong) - Korea's Giverny with Metasequoia Magic 🌲
📍 Location: 557-2 Sanga-dong, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
💰 Admission: Free (jackpot!)
🅿️ Parking: Free
⏰ When I Went: Around 5 PM at sunset (golden hour was perfect!)
This is honestly my absolute favorite! After seeing "Korea's Giverny" on Instagram, I immediately drove there. Located beside Andong Dam Hydroelectric Station, the metasequoia forest paths with small ponds and stone bridges really felt like stepping into a fairy tale. 🌿💚
I took photos crossing the stone bridge over the pond, and it genuinely felt like being in a European garden! In October, the metasequoia leaves turn this beautiful burnished gold. Plus, there were hardly any people, so it's perfect for leisurely walks and unhurried photography at this October autumn foliage spot. 🍂
My Best Photo Spots:
- Full-body shots on the stone bridge over water are the signature! I asked my friend to take multiple shots
- Sat on a wooden bench under trees pretending to read - total mood booster
- Apparently foggy mornings are even better. Couldn't make it but definitely want to try
- Just tell foreign friends "Korea's Giverny" and they instantly get it
Food I Actually Tried: Andong Jjimdak Alley near Woryeonggyo Bridge (5 min drive) - had the braised chicken, and also tried Heotjesabap (ritual food meal) which was fascinating and delicious!

4️⃣ Hoengseong National Forest Therapy Center - Family-Friendly Autumn Escape 🏞️
📍 Location: 777 Cheongtaesan-ro, Dunnae-myeon, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do
💰 Admission: Free (programs cost extra)
🅿️ Parking: Free
⏰ When I Went: 11 AM (perfect for walking!)
I brought my parents here, and it was the most healing of all the spots. The National Forest Therapy Center on Mt. Cheongtae's slopes is huge, and you can enjoy forest therapy programs along with spectacular fall colors - absolutely perfect for families! 🌳👨👩👧👦
My favorite part was the Healing Forest Trail. We slowly walked the 2km path, and the autumn palette created by maples, oaks, and pine trees was overwhelming. I went in mid-October when foliage and fallen leaves were at their peak, and walking with the forest guide's explanations made it even better!
My Best Photo Spots:
- Back-view shots walking along deck paths through fallen leaves came out gorgeous
- You absolutely must capture the panoramic autumn mountain view from the observation deck 📷
- Also got healing shots at the foot bath area with foliage backdrop
- Just tell international visitors "National Forest Therapy Center" and they'll understand
Food I Actually Tried: Hoengseong Korean Beef Town (15 min drive) - the beef literally melts in your mouth. Grilled deodeok (mountain herbs) totally recommended too!
